Module 3c: Information for children playing the ABC Mouse game

ABCMouse is an educational game for children ages 2-8yrs and features thousands of activities spanning various educational areas such as art and science. When children complete activities, they will earn tickets that they can use to buy rewards within the game such as items for their in-game pet, aquarium, or character’s room.

*Please note that while math and reading activities are available through the app, these areas should be avoided for the duration of the study. Instead, please keep children playing in the other sections (e.g., science, geography, arts and colors, music).

Account creation and navigation:

To create an account, click on “Sign Up” at the top right hand corner of the screen. After signing up, a “Get Started!” page will appear. You will then create a parent profile and use your email address and password that you will use when logging into the app in the future. You will also set up the child’s profile, selecting the age of the child and what subjects you want your child to focus on while playing the game.

This is the main page of the app and where you can access different activities, the map and all profile settings. To sign out of the app simply press the button at the top right hand corner. If you click on “Classroom”, you will find yourself on a page with 7 different buttons at the top of the screen.

This is the classroom. To see the different options of games and activities, click on the “Games” button at the top right of the screen. Here you can choose from a variety of games and activities for your child to play. You can also choose games from one of the 7 categories, for example, the “World Around Us” category. Again, please avoid playing the reading and math activities for the duration of the study.

Another way to access different games and activities is on the map. The map is accessible on the main page by clicking on the bottom left hand corner. Here, if you click on the farm, there are games and activities that talk about the different farm animals. If you click on the zoo, there are games and activities that talk about the different zoo animals. If you want to go back to the classroom where other games are, hit the big red building labelled “School”. To exit to the main page click the orange arrow on the top left side of the screen.

On the main page, if you click on the tickets at the top of your screen beside your child’s name, you will be taken to a screen that shows how many tickets your child has. Each time a new game is completed successfully, the child will earn 3 tickets. These tickets can be used to go shopping and buy things for the child’s room, their pet hamster or their aquarium.

On the map if you click on shopping, you can also access different stores where the child can buy things with their tickets.

Here are two examples of games accessible through the app. Before each game starts, there is a set of verbal and written instructions.

Mixed Up: Seasons:
In this game the child learns about the different seasons, matching the different items in the bags and dragging them into the bowl. When the child has successfully matched all the items, a mixture is made into a cake!
